Byron 'Whizzer' White

An outstanding all-around athletic, Byron 'Whizzer' White was an All-American halfback for the University of Colorado in 1937-1938 and led the US in rushing yardage and points scored.
In his rookie year while playing for the Pittsburgh Pirates - renamed the Steelers - he led the NFL in rushing, 567 yards in 152 attempts and scored 4 touchdowns. The next year playing with the Detroit Lions, 'Whizzer' White again led the NFL with 514 yards in 146 attempts, 5 TD.
He went into law practice after World War II interrupted his brilliant football career. He later became a justice of the Supreme Court of the United States. Paul Hornung

Paul Hornung was a two time All-American halfback for Notre Dame and captured the 1956 Heisman Trophy, awarded to the best college player of the year.
Hornung made his NFL debut with the Green Bay Packers in 1957 and was voted football's Player of the Year in 1961. He led or tied for the NFL season's scoring title three straight years, 1959-61. His best scoring year was 1960, when he scored 15 touchdowns, 41 extra-points, and 15 field goals for a record setting total of 176 points.
In a single game against the Baltimore Colts on Oct. 8, 1961, Hornung scored 5 TDs, the 2nd highest total in pro-football history.

Emlen Tunnell
Defensive Back and Punt Returner, New York Giants
1948-1958; Green Bay Packers 1959-1961
Emlen Tunnell was a Hall of Fame safety and when he retired held the career record for both interceptions and punt returns. He ran back 258 punts for 2,209 yards, a 8.6 yard average and 5 TDs, and in 14 seasons in the NFL, Tunnell nabbed 79 interceptions, 1,282 yards, 16.2 yards per, and ran four back for touchdowns. In the 1950's, Emlen Tunnell was the main man of the New York Giants' famed 'Umbrella Defense', and was chosen for the All-NFL team of the decade - of the 1950's. Football History
Jim Ringo

Jim Ringo joined the Green Bay Packers in 1953 after an outstanding stint at Syracuse University. Weighing 235 lbs., the muscular Ringo, was a Pro Bowl offensive center, possessing the will to excel, and reacted to the challenge of much bigger opponents by using his quickness and football smarts. He was quiet but a well respected team leader with the Packers for 11 years , 1953-63, and for the Eagles for 4 more seasons, 1964-67. One of the top centers in pro football history, Ringo was a Pro Bowl starter 10 times and wound up his 15 year career with a string of 182 straight games as a starter, including 56 consecutive with the Eagles. * Oakland's Jerry Rice caught a 4th quarter pass and ran untouched 47 yards to pay-dirt to become the first NFL player with 1500 career receptions. It was the 19-year veteran's 193rd lifetime touchdown. However, the Oakland Raiders were beaten by the league-leading Kansas City Chiefs 27-24. KC's kicker Morten Andersen kicked a game-winning 35-yard field goal with just four seconds left. Andersen's successful kick was his 31st-game ending field goal of his career. The Chiefs have won 10 and lost just once while the Raiders fell to 3-8.
* Titans 38 Falcons 31 - led by backup quarterback, Billy Volek, the Tennessee Titans rallied from a 21-point deficit to beat the Atlanta Falcons 38-31. Volek was sent in when Steve McNair, the NFL's leading quarterback injured his right hamstring. Volek went 9-for-15 good for 117 yards, including a 14-yard 3rd-quarter TD pass to McCareins. Atlanta's Doug Johnson combined with receiver Warren Dunn on a 86-yard TD pass to put the Falcons up 21-to-zip in the 1st quarter. The Titans moved up to 9-2 W/L for the year while the Falcons slipped to 2-9.
* Dolphins 24 Redskins 23 - Rickey Williams ran for two 4th-quarter touchdowns and Bruce Smith tied a NFL record with 198 career-sacks to led the Miami Dolphins (7-4) to a 24-23 win over the Washington Redskins (4-7) yesterday. Williams, 107 yards on 23 carries, plunged for a 1-yard TD and with 4:19 left in the game scored on a 24-yard run. The extra point by Mare sealed the 'Skins fate.
