Jimmy Brown Jimmy Brown
Running Back 6 ft 2 inches, Cleveland Browns 1954-1966

Football History

One of the greatest stars in football history was Jimmy Brown of the Cleveland Browns. Perhaps alone among the modern players, Jimmy Brown can stand comparison with either Jim Thorpe or Bronko Nagurski. Certainly in his own time, Jimmy Brown has had no peer as a runner. Six feet two inches tall, weighing 228 pounds, Jim was known as ‘Mr. Indestructible.’ He never got hurt, nor did he very often get stopped.

Most running backs have 1,000 yards gained from scrimmage as their goal. But in one year—1963—Jim Brown set a record with 1,863 years. He was running wild again the following year when the Cleveland Browns won the Eastern Division and swamped the Baltimore Colts and Johnny Unitas in the playoffs by a score of 27-0.

Football writer Robert Leckie wrote in 1965 - Fans who watched that 27-0 game saw Jim Brown as he usually is; fast, hitting with sledgehammer force, possessed of a savage straight-arm that is more like a powerful backward swipe of the forearm. He is able to turn on a dime while directing his blockers downfield ahead of him like a host of battering tanks.
